How long should a temporary email last—
it depends on how many messages your task still needs

Not every task needs the address for the same amount of time. Choose a use case, estimate how many messages are still coming, and tell us whether you need account recovery. We’ll recommend the right inbox window.

1. What are you using it for?

2. How many more messages do you expect?

2 messages

3. Will you need to recover the account later?

Understand the time window

Break the task into arrival, confirmation, and exit

A temporary email should last through the complete workflow—not just until the first verification code arrives.

Arrival

Wait for the first critical email

Verification codes usually arrive within minutes; downloads and trials may send a welcome email or receipt later.

Confirmation

Allow time for resends and manual review

If the site may resend a code, ask for confirmation twice, or wait for a tester’s approval, leave at least one extra round of time.

Exit

Confirm that recovery is no longer needed

Once the task is complete, switch addresses. The old inbox will be cleared when it expires, reducing future marketing email delivery.

Quick reference

How long to keep it for common tasks

Use these as planning starting points, not delivery guarantees. If a critical message has not arrived, extend the inbox before it expires.

Know the limits

Extend it, switch addresses, or use a long-term email

These three actions address different situations: not enough time, a finished task, or an ongoing relationship.

What if the countdown is nearly over but the email hasn’t arrived?

First, check that you copied the address correctly, then refresh the inbox manually. If the sender is still processing the request, extend it by 3 hours before expiry to avoid losing access midway.

Will switching addresses keep my old messages?

No. Switching addresses ends the old task and creates a new inbox. Save anything you still need first.

Which tasks always require a long-term email?

Use an email you control long term for services involving payments, assets, identity, ongoing subscriptions, team permissions, or future account recovery.
